Salt of the Earth taster day, Newtongrange, February 1999

Salt of the Earth chose to integrate three WEA group elements to contribute to the project in Midlothian. After much groundwork and three taster days held in February, the groups were formed. An oral history skills-based group was based in Dalkeith, along with a photography group in Gorebridge and a creative writing group in Newtongrange. Similar topics were suggested for the three groups to tackle, and there was crossover in recording. Material from the Dalkeith pilot group was also included.
On 4 November 1999, there will be a performance in the Scottish Mining Museum, in the Lady Victoria Colliery in Newtongrange (pictured above right), to launch an exhibition there of the groups' work and a related publication. Both will highlight contributions in the formats of the three groups, and the publication will include an audio CD.
