Welcome to the internet home of the Salt of the Earth Project of the WEA Scotland. This Scottish oral history project, funded by the National Lottery Charities Board, offers participants the opportunity to both contribute their personal unique experiences through group meetings and to learn new skills in oral history recording.
Sessions will run until the year 2000 in many locations throughout the country. The resulting recordings and contributions will be housed in the Scottish Life Archive of Edinburgh's Royal Museum, part of the National Museums of Scotland. This archive will reflect change in Scotland, in rural as well as urban communities, and attempt to encompass the breadth and diversity of the nation's inhabitants. It will depict 20th century life in Scotland from the perspective of the ordinary person - the "Salt of the Earth".
In each of the localities, participants will also work toward a production or celebration based on the recordings they have made - for example, a publication, museum exhibit, webpage, or play.
