Alness is situated on the Cromarty Firth (pictured left) in Easter Ross, north of Inverness. The group there have been involved from the beginning of the Salt of the Earth Project, having been formed as a pilot group. They are currently videoconferencing with the Thornliebank Time Travellers.

Alness at this time was a rural village with a population of 1100. It boasted many shops - grocers, butchers, tailors, shoemakers, blacksmiths, saddlers and the like.

Modern Alness supports fewer shops and more industry, but does have room for two supermarkets. Surprisingly little has changed on the high street; many of the same buildings still stand. The population of Alness has now grown to 6600. There have been many newcomers to the community, especially in the last thirty years.
