Thorntree Hall was modernised about 20 years ago after it was taken over by Eastwood District Council, but has existed in one form (or name) or another for years. It was formerly called "Strachan's Hall", after its eccentric owner Bob Strachan.
JESSIE: "[There was] a wee song we had about Bob Strachan...
'At the cross, at the cross, where we played our pitch and toss
And Tarzan [the police] came and chased us all away,
But we ran, and we ran, 'til we fell on Strachan's van
And all the ice cream cookies ran away!'
...we used to shout that after [him]!"
Thorntree Hall was used for meetings of organisations such as the Masonic Lodge and the Temperance Lodge, for many local wedding receptions, and for dances attended by most of the group members. It has continued to be a vital gathering place in the Thornliebank area.
