Housing in Thornliebank

From Storeroom to Bungalow

IAN: "My mother-in-law worked for Mr. Finlayson, who owned the pub... she got a storeroom there cleared for [us]... my wife paid the rent! When [my mother-in-law] went on holiday, she used to say, "Go up and stay in my house", it was a [lovely] bungalow... I worked at that time at the Rolls-Royce [factory], and the bus came and picked us up...[all my co-workers] looked at me coming out of that bungalow [and couldn't believe it]!"

Renting or Buying

MADELINE: "I was in digs [bedsits]... from about the age of 20 until about 17 years ago... I really had no other option [due to family problems]... I could write a book about my digs! I honestly could say that I would advise anyone to buy... I was in digs all these years and spending all my money... [then] I paid £6310 [in 1981] for one room with a kitchen and bath. It'll be worth a lot more now."
