Dr. James Strang and his son Dr. Alec Strang both held surgeries in ther house, which is now a private residence. The surgery shut around the early 1940s, soon after Dr. Alec went to the Victoria Hospital in Glasgow as an ear, nose and throat specialist. Most of the group members went to see the doctors there, who knew them nearly as friends. They were allowed to call Dr. Alec by his familiar name, rather than by the more formal "Mr. Strang", when he took care of them at the Victoria:
JESSIE: "He said [to a hospital nurse], "Anyone from Thornliebank calls me Dr. Alec, don't you or anyone else draw them up!"
