Co-op Housing

The Co-op also supplied housing to Thornliebank residents. Employees had preference, but any members were eligible to apply for housing. In Thornliebank, there were basic one-bedroom flats available. Before council housing existed, people would often stay in the Co-op flats for years.

BETTY: "It was a lovely building... and beautifully clean. The building has been altered, and they are now private houses... and I don't think you would take one if they gave you it, compared to what it was like then!"

JEAN MACLENNAN: "You took pride in doing the stairs on a Friday night... we even polished the bannisters!"

The flats had very small kitchens off the living room, and residents often tried to make them more separate. One resident put in a door... but it was a sliding door from a tramcar!
