Thornliebank Cenotaph

The Cenotaph, near the primary school on Main Street, was built as a memorial to those residents of Thornliebank who died in World War I. The names of those who died in World War II were added years later. The brother of onetime group member Annie Francis, played the bugle at the cenotaph each year in honour of his brothers who died in the war; it is said that one year he broke down, and never played after that. There is still a ceremony there every Remembrance Sunday, when poppy wreaths are left at its foot (pictured above).
