Skeabost Country House - luxury Scottish hotel, luxury lodgings and accommodations with quality restaurant (by Portree)
Since Michael and Ann Heaney took over the hotel in 2001,
they have undertaken an extensive refurbishment and restoration programme. The
work has been in keeping with the tradition and sympathy of the House and its
history, but also modernises and adds to the facilities that now provide a relaxing
and tailored stay for our guests' requirements. Ann has personally overseen
much of the work which is ongoing.
There is an air of tranquillity that envelops Skeabost and even though there
may be many guests within its walls and estate, you can always find serenity
and space. There is also a great feeling of tradition found throughout Skye,
but this has been tempered at Skeabost Country House Hotel with a fresh style
including fabrics like raw silks and fine linens, colours of green, gold, ivory
and red. With the dominant 'olde worlde' wood that furnishes every room in the
House, the sunshine streams in, warming and highlighting the different textures.
Skeabost House has an eventful history going back for hundreds of years. There are places of real antiquity in the grounds and surroundings including St.Columba's Island, the most significant historic site on Skye. Writings and the chapel ruins have dated the site before the Abbey of Iona. Later, the Island became the legendary burial ground for 28 Clan Nicolson Chiefs. The Island and St.Columba's Rock can be seen from the driveway and golf course and are easily accessible via the old Skeabost road next to the Hotel. The Clan influence has never been far from the people of Skeabost district. The land where the golf course is now located, was awash with the bloody mortal feud between the MacDonalds and the Macleods in 1528 when corpses gathered in the River Snizort, turning the water red.
The McLeods clan seat at Dunvegan Castle is only a few miles distant as is the island capital of Portree. Opening times for Dunvegan Castle should be checked directly via the castle.
