This book is an introduction to the natural history, ecology and geography of the Svalbard archipelago in the High Arctic. Over 90 full colour photographs are fully captioned. The text relates personal experiences from over 20 years of expeditions in Spitsbergen.

James Fenton studied botany at Durham University. He then joined the British Antarctic Survey as an ecologist and spent two years in the Antarctic, also enabling him to gain a PhD from the University of London. He now works as The Ecologist for The National Trust for Scotland. He has led many ski-touring expeditions to Svalbard and also lectures regularly on cruise ships around Britain, Scandinavia and the Arctic.
Sue Wrenn Fenton read physical geography at Cambridge University. Bitten by the polar bug as a result of an all-girls expedition to Greenland, she worked at the University of Alaska before becoming Head of Geography at Gordonstoun School in Scotland. She met James on a Brathay skiing expedition to Svalbard and has lectured on study cruises to Franz Josef Land, Svalbard and around Britain. She is a past President of the Scottish Arctic Club
