Day
1.
Arrive Faro Airport, transfer to TAVIRA
Together
with Lagos, Tavira is one of the most architecturally attractive
towns in the Algarve. Rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake it has
many fine 18th century buildings including 37 churches!
Day
2. TAVIRA - LOULE 25ml(40km)
Route
briefing and cycle provision: set off westwards away from the
coastal area of Tavira. Stop at the village of São Bras
de Alportel where there is time for a refreshing lunch. Continue
cycling through the countryside until to reach the busy market
town of Loulé.
Overnight stay in the hotel Loulé Jardim or similar.
Day
3. LOULE - ALTE
Today's route follows tracks as they wind through very picturesque
countryside, dotted with orange and lemon groves. Pass the small
typical Potugese villages of Perragil, Nave do Barão and
Salir. The final destination of the day is Alte, one of the most
natural and attractive villages in the Algarve. Overnight stay
in Hotel Alte.
Day
4. ALTE - SILVES
Cycle
from Alte, across the countryside towards the fascinating town
of Silves. Situated among
gentle hills beside the River Arade this historic town
has had a troubled past, having been the Moorish capital of the
Algarve, it was fought over by Moors and Christians. It fell into
decline with the silting of the river in the 16th century
but is now a prosperous centre of the orange industry. It is dominated
by the castle which dates from this period and stands high above
the town, surveying the surrounding countryside. Explore
the narrow winding streets and the cathedral. Overnight stay in
Silves in hotel Colina dos Mouros.
Day
5. SILVES - LAGOS
Leave
Silves and travel towards the coast through Porto de Lagos, Mexilhoeira
Grande and Bensafrim. Cycle on to Lagos - one of the most cosmopolitan
and historical towns in the Algarve. Enjoy a stroll along the
modern marina or through the narrow streets and around the old
town walls. Overnight stay in Lagos - Hotel Montemar.
Day
6. LAGOS - SAGRES
Today's route follows the coastline from Lagos right to
Sagres and Cape St. Vincent, which in times past, was considered
the 'end of the world'. Pass the small fishing villages of Burgau
and Salema. At Sagres visit the impressive fort which dates from
the golden era of the Portuguese discoveries and was founded by
Prince Henry the Navigator. Overnight stay in Sagres - Hotel Baleeira.
Day
7. Rest day SAGRES
A
day to relax and enjoy the sights of Sagres. Either spend the
time at the beach, or enjoy a beautifull stroll along the cliffs.
The most southwesterly point in Europe, Cape St. Vincent, a short
distance from Sagres, is undoubtly worth a visit.
Overnight in Hotel da Baleeira.
Day
8. Depart SAGRES, transfer to Faro Airport
