There are constant reminders of the turbulent history of border wars as the route follows the changing scenery and rolling landscape of the eastern borders to reach the narrow river valleys and higher hills around Galashiels, famous for its woollen industry. A slow steady climb over the Moorfoot Hills brings Dalkeith and Edinburgh into view.
