About the Glasgow Viennese Strings

The GLASGOW VIENNESE STRINGS was founded by Angus Ramsay in 1991 to provide an outlet for the performance of the lesser known works of the Strauss family. The repertoire of Johann I was generally forgotten perhaps because of his son's success with waltzes such as 'The Blue Danube' and 'Tales from Vienna Woods', but his vast musical output remains fresh and melodic. Together with works by other composers of his time, such as Josef Lanner, Franz Schubert, and Carl M. Ziehrer such music gives us a special insight into Viennese life of the 19th. century. Music by Mozart, Haydn and Fritz Kreisler also feature in the group's repertoire.

The Glasgow Viennese Strings consists of two violins, viola and double bass, which was the younger Strauss' preferred instrumentation. The inclusion of the double bass suggests he favoured its projection over that of the cello to facilitate dancing.

ANGUS RAMSAY initially studied the violin with Leonard Friedman, before moving to the Bernese Conservatoire in Switzerland, where he was a pupil of Max Rostal. In 1975 Angus was appointed principal second violin of the Wurtemberg Chamber Orchestra: the following year he was made associate leader of the prestigious Southwest German Chamber Orchestra, a post he held for nine years. Since 1985 he has been principal second violin of the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, and in 1991, Angus founded the Glasgow Viennese Strings, subsequently touring all over Scotland. He was Artistic Director of the Mendelssohn on Mull Festival between 1994 and 2000 and has been violin professor of both the senior and junior departments of the RSAMD in Glasgow since 1989. He also teaches the violin at Fettes College, Edinburgh. Angus plays on a violin made in 1997 by Roger Hansell of Yorkshire from local Tobermory wood felled in 1994.
