It's the stars' first day at Sciennes. They are very worried because they don't know how to come to school.

"This is how we keep safe on our way to school. We come to school by tunnel..

we also use padded bridges to avoid the space traffic...

and teachers come to school by hover bike.

But things are so different here - there's so much traffic! How do children here come to school?

Lauren walks to school.

This is a difficult place to cross.

The speed bumps in Findhorn Place have made a difference.

Lauren calls in for Skye. Good morning!

Lauren and Skye walk to school together. This is a safe place to cross Grange Road..

They arrive safely.

Neena comes by car because she lives quite far away.
Hurry up, Mum/dad!

Neena's dad is going on to work at the hospital after he takes Neena to school
or
Neena's mum is taking her little brother Niko to his school first.

It's busy this morning.

Neena gets out of her car a short distance away from the school. Neena 's mum/dad doesn't like trying to park outside school.

Neena arrives safely at Sciennes school.

Hi you two!

Mercedes catches the bus to school with her mum. She lives in Liberton.

Lots of buses come this way. Here's one coming now.

She gets off the bus in Newington Road.

It takes her about 5 minutes to walk from the bus stop to Sciennes.

Mercedes arrives safely at Sciennes.
Hi, you guys!

I'm on my way to school today
going the same boring way
I have no fun but I have no fear
And I know that school is drawing near.
I go downstairs and I go down street
I see AB Flynn's and I think it looks neat.
I'm on my way to school today
going the same old boring way.
I cross the road and go up street
I see the chain I always meet
I cross the road and I go quite fast
And Iget to the other side at last.
I'm on my way to school today,
going the same old boring way.
I walk along and cross the road
and then I walk another load.
I cross the road and dance along
happily singing my happy song.
Then I cross for the final time
And I come to the and of my rhyme.
I 've got to school Hip hip hooray
going the same old boring way

I'm on my way, way to the big dual with school
Walking , talking with my Mum.
Here I am at Grange Loan
I see the post box bright red
here I am in the war with the traffic
Suddenly the traffic retreats
Just making sure, looking both ways
then I'm out, over the top, walking to safety.
Phew! I've missed the bullets!
I'm on my way, way to the big dual with school
Walking talking with my mum.

Out of my house, out of my door
I'm off to school to learn some more.
By the motor bike which my brother does like
I pass Annabelle's Cafe and I'm nearly halfway
I know I'll see the scaffolding b ed today
I'm off to school I'm on my way
I wonder what I'll learn today.

I pass the shop that Mr Sharn does run
through his window is shining the sun
I'm off to school I'm on my way,
I wonder what I'll learn today.

I pass the offices which are boring
and the French polishing shop whose door bell goes dingaling
Now I'm here I was on my way
I wonder what I'll learn today.

On my way to school today
i don't know what I'll do today
maybe maths, maybe language
I don't care what but I've got my sandwich.

Lollipop lady, lollipop lady
how do you do, Lollipop lady.
Wave at me, I'll wave at you
Lollipop lady, how are you?
The m and m shop makes me happy
Can't stop there now, must be snappy

On my way to school today,
don't know what I'll do today,
maybe maths, maybe language,
I don't care what but I've got my sandwich.

We did a survey to find out how everyone else gets to Sciennes. We put our results on to graphs.

---walk to Sciennes alone.

---walk to Sciennes with another child.

---walk to Sciennes with an adult.

----come to school by car.

---Only ---come by bus.

---Only ---come by bike.

"This is really dangerous! I'm frightened! These car things go too fast! I want to go back to Starland! I I miss the tunnel and the hover bikes!"

"Don"t worry - I'm safe. I come by car!"
But don't you see - you're making a vicious circle.

James' mum wants him to travel by car because it's safer for him.

It's very busy this morning"

"It would be quieter if you'd left your car at home."

James has arrived at Sciennes safely.

But he's made it more dangerous for all the other children.

That's why it's a vicious circle."

The roads are busy, so it's not safe to walk, so parents take their children by car, so the roads are busy, so it's not safe to walk, so.......

Let's look at the busy road round Sciennes. Brian and Danny are at Grange Road, seeing how busy it is. They counted 133 cars and other traffic too in just 20 minutes. In the mornings it is even busier. A lot of Sciennes children cross Grange road on the way to school.

Melville Drive is also very busy. A lot of children have to cross it in the mornings and the P6 and P7 s have to cross it to get to the Meadows at lunchtime. It's the same on the away home.

When we did traffic surveys we found that Findhorn Place is used as a rat run. Lots of children come this way as well. At school rush hours there is a bad mix of cars and children walking.

Some crossings in the Sciennes area are very difficult and dangerous. Around Victor Hugo's there are lots of parked cxars which make it difficult to see. Cars also use this as a rat run.

Parking also causes problems in West Savile Terrace. We think West Savile Terrace is a busy main road and that it should have a pedestrian crossing.

Another big problem round Sciennes is cars parking in front of the school. Here you can see cars parking even on the zig zag line. This is a problem because emergency vehicles can't park here if they need to.

"Help we can't cross here either because the parked cars make it so hard to see!

This would never happen in Starland - star mobiles are never allowed to park in front of schools - there are very strict star police rules!

Oh look - there's just been a horrible accident! That truck was going too fast! Hope she's not hurt too badly.

here comes the ambulance now".
Did you know that over 50 000 pedestrians were injured in traffic in just one year? and half of those people were under 19.

"That's terrible! that sort of thing never happens in Starland. That poor person might never walk again! You must do something about it, to make it safer for us and for everyone who comes to Sciennes"

The speed limit in most streets is 30mph. Research show that 30 mph is too fast.

We think it should be 20 mph and so do several other local schools.

We think drivers should stop using side streets, like Findhorn Place as rat runs. It would be safer if they stayed on main roads like Mayfield Road

James' parents are happy to let him walk to school now the streets are safer.

James has to walk quite far but it is good exercise.Sometimes he meets his friends Alistair and Douglas .Now James is older he is happy to be independent.

James has arrived at Sciennes safely.

This time he's made it safer for all the other children by leaving his car at home. This is a harmonious circle.

The roads are less busy, so it's safer to walk, so parents let their children walk to school, so the roads are less busy, so it's safer to walk so .......

We want to encourage more people to go by bike to make it safer and because it's fun! We want to see more people using cycle paths like the one in the `Meadows.

(When the slide show was performed an illustrated list of wants was given to the local councillor.)

We want to have more cycle lanes to make it safer for cyclists. Lauder Road would be a good road for a cycle lane because it's very wide.

We asked the council for bike racks and they very kindly gave use some. They are already in our playground.

People are already using the bike racks and are cycling to and form school. Why don't you try cycling?

"So, what do you think Sciennes will look like in the future?"

We want a lot more walkers and bikers to make it safer for everyone on their way to school.

We want to make the playground bigger by closing Sciennes Road. This would cut down the number of cars in our area and would also give us a bigger playground.

We want to introduce a 20mph speed limit round the school area and we want to reduce the speed of traffic by having more speed bumps.

We want more crossing guides to help us cross road where there's a lot of traffic - even bike traffic!
