Hello from Sciennes School. We are P5 and we are doing a Safe Routes to School project. At the beginning of 1998 we received a letter from the Stars of Europe, saying that they were watching us coming to school and they were worried about us.They asked us to try and make the roads safer by the year 2000.
We decided to start by surveying the whole school to find out how they came to school. We are doing this project with schools from Catalonia, Denmark and Greece who are our Comenius friends from Europe.
Right now we are making a slide show showing the problems around Sciennes and how we can solve the problems. We gave the slide show a cartoon touch and made up a star character from Star-land.The star has a school bag and school uniform because she has just come to Sciennes. The show is about a star who is scared by the cars on Earth because on Star-land they have tunnels , space bridges and the teachers come on hover bikes. The star talks about how busy cars are and tries to convince us to use bikes instead of cars.
We have been doing some surveys in Findhorn Place. We found out that a lot of pedestrians went through Findhorn Place but so do cars. We are trying to stop people coming to school by car and make them walk. The parking is not good either. Some people park on double yellow lines and can cause accidents. If you come to school by car and you don't live too far away from you're school, why not walk to school? If everyone did this the roads would be safer and less accidents would happen.
Our class(P5Y) have been worried about the number of cars and pedestrians going up Findhorn Place.
We also surveyed Cumin Place & Grange Road. We found that Cumin Place was extremely quiet & Grange Road was much, much, busier so Findhorn Place was about in between. We were sure that Findhorn Place was busier so we decided to survey in the rush hours (before and after school).
We surveyed all the pupils to ask them what method of transport they use to come to and from school. We put the information onto graphs for each year group. Then we made a big map, marked with red and blue pen.The red pen represents by car, and blue pen represents walking. This map shows each pupils route in P5Y. From this map we saw that Findhorn Place was busy with traffic and pedestrians. This worried us, as it could cause accidents.
At the moment cars and other vehicles go really fast and it is not safe for children to get to school. But the P5's at Sciennes are are trying to make it safer to get to school.
We have listed some of our suggestions on how to get to school safely and also produced a slide show.
