The Burning
We did a piece of descriptive writing on what it would have been like to have our house burnt in front of us. This is what Gayle (aged 11) wrote:

As soon as the torch touched the thatch it engulfed the whole roof in flames. They licked at the windows like fingers grabbing and missing then coming back again. The flames grew more violent and the blinding smoke curled up like trees around the house. The blaze still raging , the family desperately rushed in and out trying to save as much as possible. Davie heaved a heavy box out, Kirsty took their clothes and shoes, but their Mother didn't move. The fire was going from bad to worse and in one last desperate urge to save his Mother, Davie dragged her out and threw her in the burn. |

Many people on their way to Glasgow were attacked by Highwaymen. These were men had also been thrown off their land and had turned to a life of crime. One of the most infamous of the highwaymen was Matt McFie. Here is a picture of him drawn by Joe (11). |
