Ron: When did you make your first guitar? Bernie: Actually, I was about 14 years old when I made my first real guitar. Before that I used to make ukuleles for my father. My first guitar was so ugly I had to paint it black to hide all the flaws. However, a gloss black nylon string guitar was a rarity and some lady bought it because she liked the colour. We sold it for a whopping $35.
Ron: What was it? Bernie:
Nylon string guitar.
Bernie: Actually, like my lids, I love them all. But I would have to say that my favourite guitar is the exclusive Victor Smith model.
Ron: What are your musical tastes? Bernie: My background is Classical and Flamenco. I played Flamenco guitar for about 20 years, but as my great guitar teacher told me, "you cannot be a guitar maker and a guitar player at the same time" so I dedicated myself to building. I like all types of music, Rock, Pop, Country etc, but I guess besides Flamenco music, I love Blues.
Ron: Do you admire any other Luthiers? Bernie: My son Bernie JR on top of the list, Wayne Charvel and Leo Fender.
Ron: What has been your favourite endorsee guitar? Bernie: Personal favourite: Mockingbird Arch Top Supreme, the new Kerry King V (KKV) with Widow headstock with Triple graphic and the Warlock with reverse headstock.
Ron: What are your future plans? Bernie: Well actually, I would like to assist Bernie in reaching his objective, then I want to semi-retire. My nephew Henry who grew up in our shop will be here to assist Bernie JR.
Ron: Where have your ideas come from? Bernie: Thats a hard question but Ill do my best. Im a daydreamer I guess, and its during those times that ideas pop into my head. I get a lot of ideas when I am driving especially when I get out of town.
Ron: Who thought up the crazy electrics? Bernie: A fellow by the name of Neal Moser designed the Active and Full Active electronics while employed at B.C. Rich |
