Dunnotter Castle
Dunnottar Castle, 1.5 miles south of Stonehaven on the East coast,is a spectacular fortress on a rock by the sea. Much of the castle is 14th Century and is well preserved. In 1645 the Royalist Marquis of Montrose failed in a stormy battle to dislodge the Earl Marischal of Scotland, a fierce Presbyterian Covenanter who was holding the castle. The Scottish Crown Jewels were kept at Dunnottar until 1652 when they were taken to Kinneff. |

Dunvegan Castle
Seat of the Chiefs of Clan McLeod, who have lived in Dunvegan Castle for 700 years. Among its treasures are a lock of Bonnie Prince Charlies hair and the Bratach Sith (fairy flag). Tradition has it that the flag when flown on the battlefield, it will ensure a MacLeod victory. |
