World civilization can be established on similar lines to those used for the United States of America. That is to say we need a world nationalism to unite the whole of mankind and thus put an end to the sorry story of TOO MANY NATIONS, TOO MANY NATIONAL FLAGS, TOO MANY NATIONAL CHURCHES, TOO MANY POLITICAL PARTIES, TOO MANY RACIST MOVEMENTS, NOT ENOUGH INDEPENDENT MEN AND WOMEN ABLE TO THUMB THEIR NOSES AT THEIR PRIESTS, POLITICIANS, AND NEWSPAPER EDITORS. 
  
Make no mistake I am not under any illusion that the human race can do without COMMON LOYALTIES, HUMAN CONSIDERATION, LOVE FOR ALL MANKIND, WILLINGNESS TO WORK FOR THE COMMON GOOD OF HUMANITY - which are all things that have been embedded in our thoughts due to notable independent thinkers from the past. 
  
BUT SO MANY NATIONS ALL ARMED TO THE TEETH CANNOT BE EXPECTED TO LIVE TOGETHER IN PEACE CAN THEY?  
  
And who makes these nations survive and compete and vie with each other for grubbiness - with everybody having to make great sacrifices of life and comfort and wealth to satisfy the rapacity of the taxmen and the prime ministers and the political organizers who choose their local churches to pray in, their short-sighted priests to follow and the local national flags to wave and their monarchs to bow before? 
  
Why it is PEOPLE LIKE US who do all these things!! 
  
That is why I am writing this and speaking to you through my words to try to make you realize that if WE CAN CAUSE ALL THIS MAYHEM AND BLOODSHED we can equally DROP OUR LOYALTIES TO MANY SMALL NATIONALISMS and choose a new WORLD NATIONALISM in the light of which we can all become FELLOW CITIZENS OF THE WORLD once we have MADE UP OUR MINDS that this is what has to be done.  
  
Now there is no need to go berserk in response to this new vision. There is no need to burn all the national flags or demolish the seats of government or desecrate the churches of the past or shoot the Popes and Archbishops and Ayatollahs of the divided world. We have got to recognize that all these things are part of the story of the education and maturation of the human race. Marx meant well when he wrote his Communist Manifesto but he made the mistake of asserting that EVERYBODY SHOULD BE ATHEISTS instead of allowing each of us to be what the hell we like and WANT to be.  
  
Socialists who reject European federation and ridicule world federation are BLIND to the eternal hope and message of human unity.  
  
Communists who want to censor all talk of capitalism from society and disallow people to advocate capitalistic ideas if they want to are BARBARIANS who deny people the right to think for themselves. 
  
Fascists who want all their followers to 'Believe! Obey! Fight!' (as Mussolini and Hitler did) will not recur either if my message for EVERY PERSON BEING A D.I.Y. MORALIST becomes the general practice across this planet. But again DON'T SHOOT THE FASCISTS unless they start shooting the non-fascists. 
  
Above all things we must KEEP OUR HEADS after reading this tract and deciding to comply with the direction it contains, 'THINK FOR YOURSELVES'. 
  

Now notice I am not telling you WHAT TO THINK. The choice of WHAT YOU THINK is FOR YOU ALONE TO DECIDE. I am therefore NOT SHEPHERDING YOU. 1 am only advising you of your right to become a self-directing person - which was one of the chief aims 1 had during all my years as a teacher of children in Dundee, during the war as a fighter against Hitler and as a visiting teacher from Britain to U.S.A. in the year 1968-69.  
  
What you CAN do IMMEDIATELY is to stop attending the church you go to, stop paying your political levy, and then watch what happens.  
  
These are modest FIRST STEPS and will be followed by more serious LATER STEPS as the effects of growing PERSONAL INDEPENDENCE begins to make its presence felt, due to the GROWING NUMBER OF THINKING PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD who are determined to work for UNITY rather than for DIVISIONS. 
  
I think that those who oppose apartheid in South Africa are thinking on the correct lines. I think we should treat people with various ethnic characteristics, colours of skin, shape of heads, eyes, hair, noses, lips, etc. ALL AS OUR FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS even when we get odd individuals like Muhammad Ali wanting to divide people into 'Blacks and others' and 'Muslims and others' - which is surely evidence that he is not quite the GREATEST THINKER in the world! 
  
And I think I will leave the subject at this point. I think I may have said enough to start the movement towards WORLD POLITICAL AND SOCIAL UNITY on its way. 
  
But, understand this point, clearly. The writing I have done here has been based on the scientific assumption that the human mind is the prime mover of everything to do with human society. As I see it there is no alternative (divine or otherwise) to the POWER OF THE INDIVIDUAL HUMAN MIND for giving us either the DIVISIONS in human society or the UNITY I wish to see. I can only blame myself and You and You and You (up to about THREE THOUSAND MILLIONS of you) and ask you to EXAMINE YOUR MORAL THINKING AND APPLY YOUR MIND TO THINKING FOR HUMANITY instead of, as usual, your nation, or your church, or your race, or your class, or your political party according to the priority you have been giving these and other personal purposes you may have chosen. 
  
The UNITY, FRIENDSHIP, HAPPINESS and PROGRESS of MANKIND are all affected by YOU as the owner of an INDEPENDENT MIND.
