Truth-seeking is an activity of the individual human mind which should be practised daily by everybody in the world, because there is no other way in which human beings can avoid being misled and herded and hoodwinked and confused and set against each other unnecessarily EXCEPT by each of us developing a CONSCIOUS HABIT OF DAILY TRUTH-SEEKING. 
  
If the mind I happen to have been provided with is any guide to what is happening inside the skull of any reader, I think it must be true to say that nobody can go through an adult lifetime without at least occasionally doing a stint of truth-seeking. 
  
The Holy Bible condemns it of course - which is what one would expect of a Book which has been designed by men (yes I mean 'male human beings') who imagine that they have in the Holy Bible a valuable tool for shepherding the minds of millions of human beings (yes males AND FEMALES) into ways of thought which appear GOOD to the priests and ministers and evangelicals of both sexes who are dead to further truth-seeking, and have decided to be dumb animals (sheep?) who are content to try to respond to the calls and the injunctions of the SHEPHERDS. (Ministers, Bishops, Archbishops, Popes, Ayatollahs, Seers, Political Party Leaders, Political philosophers, and tract-writers like me.) 
  
But UNlike all the rest of these people, I am at least honest enough to tell you I MAY BE WRONG. 
  
But you won't find any Pope or Ayatollah telling their 'faithful sheep' that their CERTAINTIES or INFALLIBILITIES are really not so at all. This is where they LIE (tell untruths) to all the people in the streets around them, in the countries in which they live and in the world as a whole. 
  
If it is HONESTY in thinking that you want, you should read through what I have to say - develop a CONSCIOUS HABIT OF TRUTH-SEEKING and then LOOK AGAIN at what the philosophers and priests and politicians in your lives are trying to persuade you to do. 
  
Your personal choice of form of faith should probably be. the first thing to look at, to criticize (yes, try to imagine you have never thought about it at all before) and to compare it with some of the following ideas.  
Quote: 'I reject the Bible on the first three words, "In the beginning . . . ." The truth is that we live in ETERNITY. This means that the universe we are alive in HAS ALWAYS BEEN HERE. Surely it is obvious that there can be no "beginning" or "end" (come to a stop) for anything which is ETERNAL.'  
  
Quote: 'Myself when young did eagerly frequent Doctor and Saint, and heard great argument about it and about: but evermore came out by the same Door as I went.'  
  
Here I think Omar Khayyam was denigrating truth-seeking although there can be no doubt that he was one of the most interesting of all the truth-seekers. But what he writes here is not strictly true. If he had not consulted 'Doctor and Saint' in a bout of truth-seeking he would have come away from them trying to agree with them all and this is obviously impossible. 
  
I prefer to believe that Omar Khayyam was just getting his mind round to a state of believing that his growing passion for alcohol was a permissible self-indulgence and that being drunk was the best state of mind to be in for wrestling with the contradictions of belief which abound in the minds of the people around us. Anyway I adduce the following further quote as evidence for my version of 'truth' on this subject:  

'And lately by the Tavern Door agape. 
Came shining through the Dusk an Angel Shape 
Bearing a vessel on his shoulder; and 
He bid me taste of it; and 'twas - the Grape. 
The Grape that can with Logic Absolute 
The Two-and-Seventy jarring Sects confute: 
The sovereign Alchemist that in a trice 
Life's leaden metal into Gold transmute. 
The Mighty Malmud, Allah-breathing Lord. 
That all the misbelieving and Black Horde 
Of Fears and Sorrows that infest the Soul 
Scatters before him with his whirlwind Sword . . .'
