Poetry in Dundee

I was introduced to poetry by a tailor in Dundee,
A fellow-student's father,
Who said he had great hopes for me.
He introduced me to the works of Burns,
And the first project that he gave
Was to learn by heart a Burns' poem,
Which I will take with me to my grave!
"Some books are lies frae end to end,
And some great lies were never penn’d:
Ev’n ministers, they hae been kenn’d
in holy rapture,
A rousing whid at times to vend,
An' nail’t wi’ Scripture."
That first stanza just inspired me,
For it seemed so true to me
That I resolved right there and then
That a POET I'd try to be,
But a wiser one than Robert Burns,
Who believed in "Scots wha hae!"
Whilst I believed like Gorbachev,
In Global Democracy.
My father was a Session Clerk,
So I learned many things,
That the less-favoured do not see.
He told me of short-comings,
Which surprised even me.
When I became a Humanist,
Which all the global people can now be.
After I became a teacher,
I urged all the kids to see,
The writings of all poets,
Who are the truest thinkers you will see,
In a world of many nations,I hope all will agree,
That poets like Alfred Tennyson,
Will be taught in every global school,
Along with Humanist poets like me.
So let me end with Alfred's words,
Which I hope you will let EVERYBODY see.
For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could
see,
Saw a vision of the world and all the wonder that
would be,
-----------------------------------------------------
Till the war drum throbbed no longer,
And the battle flags were furled,
In the Parliament of Man.
The Federation of the World.
