August 20, 1999 Edward Graham Macfarlane   VERILY, VERILY... (BEST WORLD POET)   Verily! Verily! said the poet, the best in all the world, Selected by the wisest and oldest of the judges, With their TRUTH FLAGS all unfurled, The Nations’ flags are set aside, Not one of them will do when the final choice comes due. It is a COSMIC CONTEST and WORLD TV is on the scene, For the most important contest the world has ever seen. Shakespeare and Burns are present, Sir Walter Scott and many more. Like Homer, Keats and Tennyson, heard many times before, For we have dipped into the future, after sharpening every mind, To choose the BESTEST POET that anyone can find. One by one the poets vanish, with their weaknesses explained, Drunks and Narrow Nationalists and Racists may not be seen again. But the still small voice of TRUTHFULNESS, Comes finally to the fore. It is Edward Graham Macfarlane who now holds the floor, And the MAIN TRUTH that he is waving as he enters the hall door,  is  “Every single creed is doubtful,” (FOR NOBODY REALLY KNOWS THE MORAL SCORE!) “TO BE OR NOT TO BE” is true of course for all, But belief in God is DUBIOUS you will hear EGM call. So FREEDOM for all Churches no longer holds us all in thrall, For no one knows which church to choose for the GREATEST TRUTH of all. We are living a truly mysterious life is what we have to face, And PERSONAL GUESSWORK is the only way to have a moral place, So IGNORE ALL ANCIENT TEACHINGS for every one may be wrong But we should hear ALL GUESSES and vote them RIGHT or WRONG. The Result may not be Cosmic Truth but we will have a WAY, Of RESOLVING ALL OUR DIFFERENT VIEWS IN A PEACEFUL WAY. SINN FEIN need not be OUTLAWED as MO MOWLAM mused, But we can thank a poet that atom war has not been used!
