Election Manifesto by EGM for the
Dundee East Parliamentary By-Election - 17th July 1952
EGM stood as a
World-Parliament Party Candidate
War's a Bogey all admit,
The point is how to deal
with it,
Labour and Tory, both at
one.
Say with pacts it can be
done.
Scottish Nationalists there
agree
(Though only if the Scots
are free)
Thus these three are, all
in all,
Arm each "nation" is their
call.
But . . and this is what
I say,
"Pacts" Preserve War Dangers'
Sway.
Armed nations are like gangsters
clad,
With gun on hip for every
lad,
Suspicious mind and nervous
hand
They menace all in every
land.
Small wonder then that we
are caught,
In brutal arms race-terror
fraught,
Arms race fraught with poverty,
Ration books and sweet-less
tea.
Think out too how all the
best,
Cars and crockery are pressed,
Into holds for overseas,
Whilst we at home are ill-at-ease
Using second-bests and rejects,
With heavy tax on slightest
pretext.
War's a bogey, no mistake,
Must be conquered, for the
sake
Of youngsters here and everywhere,
Will be conquered, if we
dare,
To question old and fixed
beliefs
That dominate old party
briefs.
War's been made to disappear
'Tween clan and clan in
yesteryear
Then 'tween Scots and English
state,
War's been banished from
the slate
How? The answer's clear
to me
Common Citizenship is the
key.
Clansmen all live now at
peace,
From inter-clan war their
release
Is gained by candid recognition
Of common loyalty and mission.
And this is why I urge,
you see,
That if from Bigger wars
you'd be
Released and happier made
all round
Your Salvation hits now
been found,
and that is - Work for Federation,
Aim to merge and join each
nation.
" Merge and Join" is what
I call
That's the way to save the
fall
From "friendliness" to "enmity"
Twixt nations, we so often
see.
But hark at Morgan Thomson
(Labour)
Listen to the fellow blabber,
Of "friendly nations" and
of "peace"
By dumping hams and bits
of cheese
Upon the tables of the wretches
Whose lives are being sucked
dry in batches
By tax to swell their nation's
arming.
It really is more than alarming.
Its foolishness and that's
a fact,
Which certainly will in
time react,
To show in no uncertain
fashion,
How nationalism arouses
passion.
Selfish aims and Tricks
and Catches
From which a war-like spirit
hatches.
Don't be misled I do beseech
you
Look back in time and let
that teach you.
Don't follow Thomson. Follow
me,
And let world order set
us free.
Britain alone can never
thrive
Whilst armed alliances contrive
To misdirect the work of
all
From goods of table house
and hall.
But, clear the world of
arming nations
And we will soon be rid
of rations,
3-day weeks and such-like
cattle,
And, what is best - We'll
end all battle.
Now let us turn to Cowcher
(Tory)
Whose attitude's a similar
story
"Peace through Strength"
is his main cry
Though stronger nations
always try
To stronger be than all
around.
Surely the moral here is
sound -
So long as nations separate
are
So long must we prepare
for war !
So long as nations stronger
grow
So long their rivals chase
them so.
When is such foolishness
to end ?
I'm asking you your ways
to mend.
If you are thinking Paul's
your man,
Stop ! Think now ! What
intelligent plan
Is there in boosting national
pride
When its foul seeds can't
be denied.
Not "Peace through Strength"
but – "Peace through Union"
Is the way in my opinion.
Strength has its uses there's
no doubt
When victory's what we think
about
But Peace through strength
is just a fiction
In fact a direct contradiction.
This rivalry of straining
nations
Straining to outstrip their
relations
Cannot be stopped immediately.
Surely that is plain to
see
But stop it's what I want
to do
And whether it's done is
up to you
Paul Cowcher wants to keep
them separate,
D'vou wonder then that I
got desperate ?
Remember folks these wars
hit all
The weaver and wifie with
the stall,
The shopkeeper and sherriff
clerk
Each one will feel the adverse
mark
Rising prices, smaller cakes,
Shorter sugar and. fat-Guid
sakes !
Howe'er can happiness abound
.
When things like these are
all around ?
So, grasp this chance I
now present
Of letting me speak in Parliament.
On Stewart I will waste
no time,
This "Scottish nation" stuff's
a crime
Against the light of federation
Which is my goal and our
salvation,
Go, get a world map and
you'll see
Who Britain splits - dissects a flea !
And think ! Each part will have a sting
Of bomb and gun and such-like thing.
Do you want Customs at the Border ?
Are Scottish passports a sane order ?
Use common-sense and feelings human
And surely you'll know what to do man !
No doubt at all there is a need
For devolution from London's greed,
But that is quite a different case
From working, up a "Scottish Race."
The thing's absurd, we are a mixture
So let world union be your fixture.
Now, are you really going to send,
One of these three our ills to mend ?
Remember, quite soon after school,
Your boy becomes the army's tool
And armies are most needful features
So long as we are nationalism's creatures
Thomson, Cowcher, Stewart and I,
Of these four, three leave high and dry,
Delete three nationalists is my plea
Tweedledum ! Tweedledim ! and Tweedledee !
That leaves me - for federation
Let X - for Macfarlane - shock the nation
Shock the nation ? Shock the world !
And set World Parliament's flag unfurled.
I don't want mere publicity
A landslide's what I hope to. see,
For all to see in every clime
Mine is the way and there's still time.
Do think it clear for kiddies' sake
Use your will and courage take,
To spurn all nationalist's pretensions
Whatever is their state's dimensions.
Make Dundee-East of '52
A landmark for the world to view
With thankfulness and something stronger
For which they need wait no Ionger.
Show Dundee's Folk's big aspirations
Are end of war 'tween separate nations.
