| Introduction
IF, as the old adage asserts, all roads lead to Rome, then in the early weeks of
May 1967 a massive diversion must have been in operation. For in those heady days, when
the spirit of The
Celtic Football Club was on the move, all roads led
inexorably, not to the Eternal City but to Lisbon, Portugal ,where The Famous Glasgow Celtic had a date with destiny. Having swept all before them throughout a breathtaking
season, the expansive National Stadium in that historic capital was to be the venue for
Celtics greatest triumph to date , which would conclude another indelible chapter in
a history littered with unique achievements.
On 25th May, 1967, Celtic became not only the first Scottish but the first British and indeed the first non-Latin club to
win the European Champions Cup, following in the footsteps of the incomparable Real
Madrid, whose five successive victories from the tournaments inception in 1955/56
will probably never be equalled. The great Spanish club was immortalised in Scottish
football history by the unforgettable Hampden final of 1960 against Eintracht Frankfurt, a
match which etched such names as Di Stefano, Puskas and Gento forever into our national
psyche.
The mighty senors were
also Celtics immediate predecessors as European Champions, having lifted the trophy
for a sixth time in a 2-1 victory over Partizan Belgrade in 1966.
