Sci. Agriculture. Poultry FAQ's

These pages are being made up from the wealth of practical and technical knowledge that can be found on the newsgroup.  None of the topics are finished - they probably never will be - we always have something to learn. If there is something you wnat to know that is not here - get on the group and ask - they are a really friendly group and no question is too simple - and hopefully if it is complicated someone will be able to help find the answer. The group is made up from all walks of poultry keeping from 2 birds in the city to commercial egg and meat producers - and from all over the world.

Q -What is required for a coop?
A -The best coops tend to be improvised, out of what ever is handy. Remember, cheap is the word.
For those of us that live in a more modern world, this means 4x8 sheets of plywood, and building materials.
A coop needs 3 things: Roosting area. (this also gets a majority of poop)
Nest box area. Feeding area.
I originally started out with a coop that was open on 3 sides, but am working on boxing it in completely, since the only time birds that free range spend in there is to sleep, lay, and maybe eat.   Unless it is zero degrees out, then they are happy to stay inside...
So keeping them cool isn't as much a concern as keeping them warm.

I am building a small coop for about 5 Black Giants. What size entrance will
these giants want? And how much headroom above the perches?

Has anyone got a Henspa ? are they any good ??
