Mrs Mackie

On Thursday we interviewed Mrs Mackie in the library at school. Our topic is local community and we are starting with myself and the school. Mrs Mackie likes her job a lot but sometimes she gets annoyed. She does not like it when the dinner hall is noisy. She will retire when she is sixty-five years old. She likes working at Kinnoull.

She won a first aid certificate for her job. She loves working with children. At school her favourite subject was English. She wanted to go to London when she grew up.

She came to the school and Mr Warburton and Mrs Calder interviewed her. She does not like looking at cuts but she loves her job. We asked her if she had worked anywhere else. Mrs Mackie said yes I worked nearly everywhere. She gets the same holidays as us. She thinks children today behave better than in the past. Mrs Mackie likes each class in a special way. She likes playground supervising. We all think she is kind in the jobs she does. She collects dinner money and give us lunches when we forget our money. She ties shoe laces, zips up coats, sorts out fights, goes on trips, helps with art work.

She does Mrs Beaton's job if she is off. Just now Mrs Mackie is our afternoon secretary too. We couldn't manage without her

Our Primary 6 pupils studied the Victorian era. The children managed to bring many Victorian artefacts to school and did a lot of personal research. One of the things they discovered was that being poor was really hard and that there were great differences between the lives of the rich and poor.

Here are two poems. The first is by Jamie and the second poem by Thomas.

As I Walked Past

As I walked past I heard,

Children's' shouts, babies screams.

People shouting Buy, Buy, Buy.

As I walked past I saw,

Mothers trying to calm their babies.

Ragged old children scurrying all around.

As I walked past I smelt,

Coal from the miners' children.

The strong smell of aniseed balls,

And of course that foul smell of horse manure.

As I walked past I felt,

Thousands of eyes were staring at me.

I wish I could help these people.

A Poor Boy's Tale

I am tired and dirty.

My face and hands are sore.

I live under the railway arches.

And fight for food and warmth.

My mum and dad are dead.

My brothers been arrested.

I live by selling matches

And can only just feed myself

My clothes are rags.

They are my only clothes.

I can only just lie down under my railway arch

and need to fight for food

Carriages drive through the streets

We are ignored by the driver and people

The carriage is bright unlike our street

We feel abandoned by the world.

She was assisted by several parents who helped to supervise the activities.

Testing the best design for a paper boat by seeing

how many plastic cubes it will hold before it sinks.

Mrs Mackie enjoyed it just as much as the children.

Vehicle building takes care and concentration.

The important test.

How far will it roll ?

Mrs Reid took P5 on a visit to Stirling Castle. The class had a wonderful day.

Mary Queen of Scots would have recognised these clothes.
