Schizophrenia Drug Reduces Complications of Alzheimer’s Disease In a study of 625 patients in 40 US nursing homes, the drug risperidone, administered in low doses, was found to reduce some of the complications of Alzheimer’s disease, including hallucination, delusion, and aggressive behavior. Up to one-third of patients with Alzheimer’s disease, which is characterized by memory loss and confusion, also develop psychotic symptoms. Of the patients who were given resperidone, 36% showed a 60% improvement in psychotic symptoms. Janssen Pharmaceutica, which currently sells resperidone for the treatment of schizophrenia, plans to request FDA approval next month to market the drug to patients with dementia (general mental deterioration).
