The Historic Burghs Association of Scotland

About us

Scotland’s historic towns are vitally important to its people, culture, heritage and economy.

The Historic Burghs Association of Scotland (HBAS) brings together people responsible for managing Scotland’s historic burghs, towns and cities. It was established in 1995 and has members from public, private and voluntary agencies.

The Association promotes partnership in encouraging high quality conservation in historic towns by:

  • taking a collective multi-disciplinary approach on issues likely to affect historic towns whilst respecting each town’s history and archaeological inheritance;
  • identifying and promoting best practice;
  • organising seminars, workshops and conferences to discuss matters of common interest;
  • producing papers, research and educational material;
  • establishing European links with similar organisations.
