Welcome to the Internet Auroral Observer Group.

This site is a resource for astronomers (both professional and amateur) as well as the general public who have the opportunity to observe auroral activity. It's aim is to provide the layman with the necessary tools, so as to record data which will yield useful results.

Whenever an auroral storm occur's, we have noticed that a number of anecdotal reports appear both on Usenet newsgroups and email discussion lists. Whilst the Internet provides a viable medium for the recording and reporting of aurorae, no standard exists for electronic reporting. We therefore aim to provide the observer with the basic tools to adequately record an auroral storm should they be lucky enough to observe one.

The protocols outlined on this site are used by both the British Astronomical Association and the Society for Popular Astronomy Aurora Sections. The recording standards are those outlined by the International Union of Goedesy and Geophysics (1963).

We are not affiliated 'officially' with any of the main astronomical groups. However, IAOG members are involved with both the British Astronomical Association [BAA] and the Society for Popular Astronomy [SPA}.

All reported observations are sent to the relevant Section Directors of the BAA and SPA.
