The Background

On Friday 30 June 2000 Graeme High School shuts its doors and says farewell to pupils for the very last time in the building which we all know and love. Come July 2000 the bulldozers will be hard at work and the distinctive red brick facade will be razed to the ground. Many will want to reminisce on their time at the school, to remember old school friends, to recall the words of wisdom of their old teachers: their nicknames, their mannerisms. The corridors and the classrooms have seen many an episode.

The school opened in 1932 and the original accommodation, which was enhanced in the seventies by a building programme of extension, reconstruction and renovation completed in 1972, has provided a quality education to thousands of Falkirk young people for the last 67 years. In earlier days the school was known as Falkirk Technical School. In 1957 it changed its name to Graeme High School. In the early days there was a focus on the teaching of technical and commercial subjects. The school had its very own foundry. In more recent times as a comprehensive school it has prepared many young people for University, the Professions and the World of Work.

HELP US TO LOOK FONDLY BACK
HELP US TO LOOK FORWARD

We intend to mark the end of the life of our present building by having a number of opportunities for present and former pupils and present and former teachers to meet and remember.
At this time when so many who have settled away from Falkirk come home to be with families for Christmas you might like to make a note of some events and dates.

1. Exhibition of Memorabilia and Stage Presentation: Monday 8th May, Tuesday 9th May, Wednesday 10th May, Thursday 11th May  2000

An opportunity to take a guided tour of the school, to attend a short stage production when pupils and staff and friends of the school will attempt to reflect on the highs and lows from the different phases of the school's history. After the show, refreshments will be available and there will be an opportunity to mingle and meet up with friends from yesteryear.

HELP ! Your assistance is requested in making the display of memorabilia as complete as possible. If you have any school photographs, or certificates or prizes or medals awarded to you or someone in your family, it would be good to borrow them from you to display in our exhibition. It would be particularly helpful to receive such items from the earlier period of the school.

2. Photographic Memories of FTS/GHS

There will be the publication of photographic memories of the school here on the school web site. Much of the history of the school will be told through photographs both old and recent, with just sufficient commentary to reflect on the changing face of education from 1932 till now.

3. THE VIDEO

Pupils and staff are currently compiling a video to capture (before demolition) some of the features and character of the school. This production which it is hoped will bring back memories to many will be completed by Spring. Copies will be able to be purchased at a bargain price.

4. HELP US TO GET IN TOUCH

We would like to identify the oldest living former pupil. We want to make contact with as many former school captains as possible.

We want to make contact with as many former Dux Medallists and Proxime Accessits as we can. We want to make contact with as many former teachers as we can and particularly those who served in the times of Rectors.

If you qualify in any of these categories then please write or make telephone contact with:

5. WHERE ARE THEY NOW ??

There will be many old boys and girls who were educated in Falkirk Technical School or Graeme High School who have become very successful in one field or another. We would like to be able to feature such successes in our celebrations.

There is:

- there will be many more whose details are not currently known to us.

We want you to contact us with details of these successful FP's.

6. Marker of The End and New Beginnings for Pupils

Celebratory pens, T-shirts, mugs, etc. will be commissioned to give to pupils, a token to mark the events of the year 2000. The school photographer will be invited to take class group and individual photographs. The group and the individual portraits will be packaged to provide a marker of this historic year. A Year Book is being produced to form a unique record for our present pupils.

7. Millennium Concert

A Millennium Concert to celebrate the start of education from our new school will take place in October 2000. Present and former pupils and staff are invited to join us for this.
