I've never managed to get of work early enough (two days early!) to make it to this Friday evening race in the Outer Hebrides! Maybe someone out there has done it and has an opinion. Mail me by clicking here in the mean time I'll ask Debbie who may well have run every running race in the Hebrides

Creagh Dubh Hill Race

This is supposed to be an opinionated list but I know little of this race since I always reckon that the A9 from the Forth Bridge to Netonmore is just too much drive for a wee race. Stronger characters than me will be rewarded with a wee cracker of a race. Or so I'm told.
The young, stupid, courageous or fit amongst you might like to try this and the Glen Clova race as a beautiful pair of races for one weekend. At least the shorter race is the first of the pair!

Glen Clova Hill Race

Starts at the Clova Hotel, Glen Clova, Angus Sunday 4th August 15 Miles 5,500ft (A Long)
The race starts at 11:00 in the morning.

Dont kid yourself with this monster! (For that is what this is gentle surfer). This is a race of 2 halves and both halves would be fun as a run on their own. Another serious entry in the "Don't Kid yourself" section is getting there. It's Sunday Morning and you have to get to Kirriemuir and then you've still got a decent drive.

Moanin apart this is a super race and really well organised in a pleasantly understated manner. The area is striking with a number of typical big round grampian style hills. Take plenty of grub and start slowly....there's PLENTY of time to take prisoners in the second half.

North Berwick Law Race

Starts at theNorth Berwick Harbour On Wednesday 7th August 3Miles 600ft (C Short)

This wee race has an awfy lot of road in it followed by a steep short section up a redundant volcanic plug. It has a lovely fresh sea breeze usually and often has a haar forbye. YP of the Famous Hunters Bog Trotters has been known to take advantage of the excellent pubs on the route during the race. Many others have done so after the race. The next culinary challenge is logically a pint and a fish supper purchased and consumed during the race.

Largo Law Hill Race

Starts at the Robinso Crusoe Hotel, Lower Largo on the 10th August 5Miles 900 ft (B short)

With a start and finish at a quaint pub overlooking a lovely wee harbour. With a challenging road/hill combination in warm August weather and a lot of enthusiastic support this race really can't fail. The fact that the Famous Hunters Bog Trotters got a 1,2,3 a couple of years ago is an added bonus. Take care when coming off the hill and through the farm steading to take the right hand turn. I usually bag a couple of places from various Captain Oates behave-alikes who wander of straight ahead presumably muttering "I may be some time"

Watch the travelling! Lower Largo is quite a distance from the motorway.

Glentrool Forest Hill Race

Starts at the Bruce's Stone, Glentrool on Saturday 10th August 10 Miles 1680ft (C Medium)

I know nothing much about this race. The whole area is however well worth visiting for it's natural beauty and relative peacefulness. If you are travelling from the east I recommend going via Elvanfoot, the Dalveen pass, Thornhill, Moniaive, New Galloway and Newton Stewart.... but not if you are in a hurry!

International Selection Hill Race

Starts near the Crook Inn, Tweedsmuir on 10th August. There are a number of courses to simulate the climb that will be found at Telfes, Tirol, Austria for the "Berglauf Weltkup"
The races start at or just after 1 in the afternoon.

There are variously races for old and young, males and females. The senior mens race climbs and descends the others mainly climb.

Entries on the day Cost money

The races wander up and down well made tracks and open hill pasture on the eastern slopes of Broadlaw. They finish at the top where your gear will have been transported from the start. Interestingly the majority of the ground is owned by an Austrian. The new clock he has installed will also help the runners become aurally acclimatised. Sadly the relative heights of Tweedsmuir and Telfes don't match so that acclimatisation will not happen.

Given that the races are used to select at least some team members for the world cup the whole thing had an air of tension last time (2 years ago). Normally docile and placid runners just were not interested in anything amusing. It is also the case that there will be fund raising going on so those who want to keep their money and smile a lot might think about going elsewhere.
