Ben Lomond Hill Race
Saturday, May 6 2000
9 Miles 3192ft Category AM
Starts at 13:00:00
Pre-Entries required by Sat 29th April 2000
From Rowardennan, Loch Lomondside
The race up Ben Lomond, famous in song, and stunningly set beside the Loch has long been popular with both officialdom and runners.
It even featured in copies of the Guinnes book of records as a notably fast 4.5 miles for the descent. Maybe Brian can measure this.
As I recall it used to regularly form the SAAA Hill race championship with medals for the first three. Laterly support from Polaroid and Dumbarton AC fell away and the race was adopted by Westerlands.
After a number of years run by Alastair Campbell this year its under new management by Brian Bonnyman as Westies rep at Rowardennan. Brian is being all efficient and organised. It reminds me of when you had a new teacher who was all rules till she felt relaxed about the new class.
The course is a typical highland day out starting on tarred road, through forest, out on to the hill then up to a barren rocky top and return by a similar route.
Men's Record is 1:02:16 set by J Wild in 1983.
Women's Record is 01:11:57 set by B Redfern in 1990
