The Carnethy Five is brilliant. For each element of the event it is nearly perfect with only one exception.

The race is really popular so that it is well attended and always well competed. The course is not too long so that even if overweight and unfit you can waddle round without too much difficulty and still appreciate the beautiful winter scenery. The race is always well organised and you get decent food and you can also get a shower afterwards.

Because it is so popular it manages to support several pleasant after race options varying from Trotter drinks thru to a Ceilidh and the Mambo club. Another nice effect of the attendance is that you will often meet people that you haven't seen for ages.

No one is perfect however and the prize giving at Carnethy is always so bad that it is in itself a collectors item. A real "how not too" with lost souls mumbling the results in a huge echoing barn where people are still changing, chatting and feeding. Not only is it badly done but it is long with esoteric prizes like the first left handed Scotsman over 35, resident in Edinburgh taking part for the first time.....

The real test for me for any race is "Does it live with you, are the memories mainly sweet?" For The Carnethy 5 the answer is always a big enthusiastic YES.

Men's Record is 0:46:56 set by G Bland in 2000.

Women's Record is 00:55:09 set by A Mudge in 1999
