Cairntable Hill Race

6.5 Miles 1200ft Category BM

Starts at

From Muirkirk, Ayrshire

Although billed as a new race in some quarters this was definitely run a number of times a few years ago and may have been continuously run. I certainly did it in 1985.

Muirkirk is a typical mining village with a huge opencast pit nearby. The whole valley is rough and unwelcoming grazing with dozens of old mine workings and railway lines. I find it difficult to see the area without thinking about the thousands of lives spent digging the coal out of the ground for not much money. A run through any of the hills around here always has an air of our poorer past.

The race was run as a village event and last time I did it you paid for and got a solid medal. The whole atmosphere is a wee bit like joining a strangers wedding party where everyone is friendly but itdefinitely had the feel of a private party.
